The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, passed by Congress in June 2021 and signed by President Biden on June 17th, 2021, federally recognized a holiday which so many across the country have celebrated since its inception. The holiday commemorates the emancipation of the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865 - two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Now, the holiday serves as a reminder of the strength and resiliency of the African-American community and a look forward into creating a better future for this nation. The holiday’s legacy lives on through Juneteenth Music Entertainment, a label for independent artists to tell African-American history through music. “Look at African American musical storylines back into the last century, much of our history is told through story. One of the reasons that I made this label was because when Biden made Juneteenth the Federal Holiday, I really wanted to do something that could impact others and make a difference. Juneteenth is the American story and belongs to every last one of us. It’s a celebration of the legacy African Americans have left for us, through music,” says Joyce Ward, President and Founder of Juneteenth Music Entertainment. In preparation for the company’s first world tour - a trip to Ghana, where the holiday is also celebrated - Juneteenth Music Entertainment released their new song, “Our Legacy Lives Forever” by Joyce Ward, featuring P. Manzell Bledsoe. “We recorded a live video of us performing “Our Legacy Lives Forever” at on June 10th. After that, we will be in Galveston, Texas to celebrate the holiday on the 17th,” says Ward. Juneteenth Music Entertainment’s trip to Ghana will feature a collaboration with artist Hakeem Shabazz and the premiere of two new songs, “Save the Children” and “Mama Africa is Calling You”.  Photo courtesy of Joyce Ward. Good thing that there may be no better place in the country than Sarasota to cool off in the clear Gulf waters and sunbathe in the pristine white sand - every year thousands of locals and tourists alike flock to the area for an experience unlike anything else. The area’s unrivaled beauty, however, is not without its hazards. High heat-indexes, rip currents, and near-daily thunderstorms can ruin a beach day in no time - which make it all the more important to swim in the safety and protection of the Sarasota County Lifeguards. While they may wear red swim trunks, forget the hair spray and skimpy bathing suits from Baywatch - these lifeguards have a very real and vital duty to beachgoers. “Our staff consists of 29 full-time open water lifeguards, eight of which are lieutenants, two are captains, and I’m the manager,” says Rick Hinson, Manager of the Sarasota County Lifeguards. “I started here 23 years ago. After three years I became a Lieutenant and spent almost 17 years working all of the beaches. About three years ago, I was promoted to Captain, where I learned how to train our lifeguards,” says Hinkson. “There are six beaches that we guard over a 35-mile stretch of coastline. Every beach has its own quirks and characteristics. Lido beach is our northernmost beach, housed in the city of Sarasota. Siesta Key beach is the crown jewel - it’s won the whitest sand competition, has been voted the number one beach in America over the years and gets by far the largest footprint of visitors every year,” says Hinkson. Further south lie Nokomis and North Jetty beaches. “We call those pocket beaches, as they’re much smaller than Lido and Siesta. Both of these beaches also have their own challenges because of a rock jetty - any time there’s a fixed structure, you’re gonna have consistent rip currents or a little more volatility when storms hit,” attests Hinkson. While the southernmost beaches, Venice - known as the shark tooth capital of the world - and Manasota - are without fixed structures (check), the threat of riptides is still very real at any location. “First and foremost, always swim near lifeguards in safe, designated areas. If you’re in the water and start to feel like you’re in a rip current, swim parallel to shore. Rip Currents run perpendicular to the shore, so if you’re swimming parallel to the shore, hopefully you can swim out of it. Most importantly, however, is not to panic - we’ll come get you. At the end of the day, our goal is always to have everyone come home with a smile,” says Hinkson.    Pictured: Rick Hinson, Manager of the Sarasota County Lifeguards. Photo by Wyatt Kostygan. Demarre McGill performs one of the most popular works in the flute repertoire: Francis Poulenc’s exquisite Sonata for Flute and Piano. When British-American composer Rebecca Clarke’s viola sonata was performed in 1919, the bias against women in classical music was such that critics refused to believe she had written such a “powerful work” herself. Clarke’s “one little whiff of success,” as she called it, has since become a mainstay of the repertoire; Teng Li will perform the groundbreaking piece. Robert DeMaine, Ani Kavafian, and Jeffrey Kahane join forces in Schumann’s First Piano Trio. From its expressive opening to its soul-searching slow movement and radiant finale, the trio brings to life every aspect of Schumann’s complex personality.
